Charity punishments

Charity punishments convert last place into good works: donations in the loser's name (to a cause the league picks, naturally), volunteer shifts, charity races, blood drives.

They are the answer to the league member who thinks punishments are mean. Fine: the loser suffers and a food bank eats. Everybody wins, except the loser, which is the point.
